Summary

"Critique of Pure Reason" according to Kant himself is a treatise on method. The revolution in the way of thinking that Kant carried out in philosophy with his transcendental method and which he himself compares to the revolution of the famous method of Copernicus in astronomy, consists in the fact that he made objects conform to our knowledge, and not knowledge to objects. In the first part of the Critique, in the transcendental doctrine of the elements, Kant deals with space and time as principles of sensory knowledge, with pure intellectual concepts, or categories as formal conditions for the unification of the manifold of experience in the synthetic unity of our consciousness, with synthetic judgments a priori from pure concepts as principles of metaphysics and finally with ideas as concepts of pure reason, which consider empirical knowledge as determined by an absolute totality of conditions and serve to rise in the order of conditions to the unconditioned. In connection with ideas is the doctrine of transcendental idealism. Kant points out that the theses and antitheses of antinomies are possible because they start from two different standpoints – that of the world in time and space and that of the world in itself. In the second part of the Critique, the doctrine of the transcendental method is set out, which deals with the formal conditions for a complete system of pure reason.
