Summary

The main available sources (institutions and experts) of data and estimates on Bulgaria’s economic growth, compared with other European countries from the early 20th century to the present day, are presented. Statistical data on national income and gross domestic product, along with their annual changes, are analyzed. Based on the nature of the economic system and the corresponding available homogeneous statistical data, three distinct sub-periods are identified: the economic boom following Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule; the development of capitalism from the beginning of the century until the end of World War II; the era of central planning in Bulgaria until the late 1980s; and the period after 1989, which reflects the country’s transition to a market economy and its integration into European and other international structures.
