Summary
This monograph by the renowned Bulgarian scholars G. Chernyavski and M. Stanchev is dedicated to a remarkable figure in Bulgarian history—Georgi Bakalov. For the first time, it examines the complete biography of G. Bakalov, including his period in exile in the former Soviet Union and his return to Bulgaria. Based on previously unknown archival materials, primarily from Russian archives, the authors present G. Bakalov as a public figure, scholar, and literary figure, translator, and publicist. Both G. Bakalov’s idealism and the contradictory traits of his character are revealed—a drive for creative exploration alongside conservatism, dogmatism, partisan biases, altruism, and selfishness. The study highlights G. Bakalov’s undeniable contributions as a scholar, brilliant writer, translator, historian, and public figure.
